Starting Muay Thai is an exciting step, but let’s be real—it can also feel intimidating. If you’ve ever thought, “I’m not fit enough for this,” or “What if I look like I don’t know what I’m doing?”—you’re not alone. These thoughts are completely normal, and we’re here to help you push past them so you can enjoy everything Muay Thai has to offer.
At Roots Muay Thai Academy, we understand that stepping onto the mats for the first time can be nerve-wracking. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help ease your worries and answer the most common questions from new students.
"I’m a total beginner. Will I be out of place?"
Not at all! Our classes are designed with beginners in mind. Everyone starts somewhere, and the reality is—most people in your class have been where you are. Your instructor will walk you through the fundamentals step by step, making sure you feel comfortable before moving on. You’ll also find that more experienced students are happy to help and encourage you.
✅ Tip: Start with an open mind and a willingness to learn. We’ll take care of the rest!
"I’m not in great shape. Will I be able to keep up?"
Absolutely! One of the biggest misconceptions about Muay Thai is that you need to be in top athletic condition before starting. In reality, training will naturally build your fitness over time.
✅ Tip: Go at your own pace. If you need to take a break, that’s okay! Progress comes with consistency, not perfection.
"What if I mess up and look silly?"
Good news—no one expects you to be perfect! Muay Thai is a skill that takes time to develop, and everyone in the gym is focused on their own journey. Mistakes are part of learning, and we celebrate progress, not perfection.
✅ Tip: Shift your mindset! Instead of worrying about getting everything right, focus on having fun and getting a little better each day.
"What should I wear and bring to my first class?"
For your first class, all you really need is:
Comfortable athletic clothing (shorts and a t-shirt/tank top work great)
Water bottle (staying hydrated is key!)
Bare feet (we train without shoes on the mats)
Hand wraps & gloves (if you have them—if not, we can provide loaner gear!)
✅ Tip: Arrive 10-15 minutes early to meet your instructor and get familiar with the space!
"What kind of people train here? Will I fit in?"
The best part about Muay Thai? It attracts people from all walks of life! At Roots, you’ll find parents, students, professionals, and people of all ages coming together to train. Some are here for fitness, others for stress relief, and many just love the challenge of learning something new. No matter your background, you’ll find a welcoming and supportive environment where respect and encouragement are at the core of everything we do.
✅ Tip: Say hello! Introduce yourself to your training partners—you’ll quickly realize that Muay Thai is about community as much as it is about technique.
"What should I expect after my first class?"
You might feel a little sore (totally normal!), but you’ll also feel an amazing sense of accomplishment. Your first class is just the beginning of an exciting journey, and each session will bring new challenges, progress, and confidence.
✅ Tip: Commit to a few weeks of training before deciding if Muay Thai is for you—most people fall in love with it once they get past the first few sessions!
